Most people think that shooting archery is just pulling a string back and letting go to hit the target; however, archery is a difficult and fun sport to learn because of the discipline, precision, and practice needed to be proficient. The sport is now an Olympic event that many good archers take part in.

The first and most important aspect of archery is safety; when you go to a class to learn about archery the first part of the class will be about safety. When shooting any kind of projectile you must be safe. A projectile has much more range than a knife, or a spear, and this means no one can move in front of you without the danger f being hit by a projectile, or being killed. When you shoot archery safety is the primary concern of all archers to keep yourself and others around you safe. If you follow this guideline you will have a solid foundation on which to build your skills.

The next aspect is precision; when an archer is in the position to shoot he or she must be in an almost perfect position and form. When someone walks up to the line they shouldn’t raise their shoulder when they draw the bow, you shouldn’t have to narrow or too wide a stance, and when releasing the string you must not jump of the string or drop the bow immediately after shooting; these are only a few common mistakes a new or inexperienced archers make. When an archer is precise and shoots enough the body will slowly memorize the positions and their motions with become more fluent.

The last and almost most important is Practice. Someone can be the greatest archer who ever lives, but if he or she does not practice, consistency will drop dramatically. When I haven’t shot archery for a week many things happen, when you shoot heavier bows you lose your strength because your body believes you wont need to pull such weights again. Also when you don’t practice you lose muscle memory; your body will memorize the positions and actions you go through to shoot your bow. When you are a well practiced and consistent, you will be at your best to shoot.

When interested in becoming an archer you should find a range, and see if you can join a class to learn the basics. As my friend Jon once told me when I began archery “Don’t let other tell you what is good, but let them influence you.” He meant that when you begin archery choose what style of archery suits you best. If an archer can be safe, precise, and well trained he or she can fully enjoy the sport of archery.
